Making Spaces case study on Creative Spaces, City of Melbourne, Arts Victoria and RMIT Design Research Institue and the Future Focus Group of the Committee for Melbourne
"Our philosophy is based on the idea of "makers helping makers" and our aim is to generate continued support of each other within the handmade community and promote our work to the wider community at the same time"

"Making Spaces Marketplace in Parramatta  is a creative collective of handmade designers retailing in Parramatta CBD and is supported by Arts NSW & Pop-Up Parramatta. Like many pop ups, the idea is focused on injecting creative enterprise and creative infrastructure into unused buildings and spaces in the CBD".

Pop Up Parramatta: from empty space to creative space - a participant's perspective
"A little over 12 months ago, we were introduced to the Pop Up Parramatta initiative via a public meeting. Instantly a seed was planted: we could do something that we’d not otherwise be able to do - showcase our work in a retail environment run by us! 8 months on, our proposal was approved and we were matched with a retail space that had been vacant for 2 years. Within 10 days of signing the lease, we had a store up and running!"

Arts NSW
"It was begun in 2010 by Parramatta City Council to transform Parramatta into a thriving hub where creative practitioners create, develop and sell their work. Pop-Up Parramatta aims to build a vibrant, connected and creative community"

"Making Spaces Marketplace, the brainchild of Kirrily Walker (Needle vs Thread) and Kirsten Semenetz (Forget me not Paperware) strongly acts on the notion of the retailing (Australian) handmade returning to demand. It’s a pop up shop, filled with mini pop up shops and some semi-permanent stock. The aim is to promote handmade design to the wider community, providing emerging and established designers a unique opportunity to display and sell their own products in the heart of the Parramatta CBD"

"Making Spaces Marketplace aims to promote handmade design to the wider community, at the same time giving artists and designers a unique opportunity to display and sell their own products on a temporary basis in the heart of the Parramatta CBD. If you're an interested artist or handmade designer, why not mosey on down to see what's happening and get involved with the project?"

"We encourage handmade artists and designers to have a look at what we are doing and get involved with our project!"

"Why do you love handmade so much? What’s not to love? It's what we do! We are passionate about non mass produced products, indie designers and the handmade community. We know handmade as producers and as consumers and are huge advocates of it being a way of life"

The Sun

"Making Spaces Marketplace is a shop with many keepers. It began trading in handmade goods last Wednesday, with Kirrily Walker and Kirsten Ryan-Semenetz officially behind the counter, but with other sellers who had rented space within the store standing inside and spruiking their wares"
